Are You Frustrated with Your Results?

It can be about work, your diet, a relationship….You’re doing everything you can and you feel like you’re not getting anywhere.  You’re frustrated and disappointed because you’re not experiencing what you are ready for mentally.

Here are a few ideas to help:

1.  Focus on why you care so much, not on the results you’re getting.  You might be working so hard for a sense of accomplishment, for your family, for a sense of pride, or maybe just to do better than someone else.  Your underlying reasons haven’t changed, so focusing on them can help you get over a rough patch.

2. Focus on the process, rather than the results. Take care and concentrate on each activity you do toward your goal, no matter how small. Use that concentration as a form of meditation by losing yourself in each individual step.

3. Focus on individual aspects that are going well and that you enjoy.  If you’re trying to lose weight, maybe you’re feeling better each time you exercise, even if the pounds aren’t coming off the scale. If you’re frustrated at work, maybe you have at least one individual project that’s going well, or a co-worker who depends on you to brighten up his or her day.

4. Focus on what you can do differently – change up how, when, where, what you’re doing.  Maybe exercise in the evening instead of the morning. Conquer your to-do list last in the day instead of first, using the morning to brainstorm new ideas. Take a weekend trip with your significant other.  Get out of your rut.

5. Focus on your next move. Maybe it’s time to change jobs. Be grateful for what you already have, but if you’re not getting recognized by your boss, or if you have a difficult co-worker standing between you and success, maybe it’s time to get a new job.   If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, resistance will pop up in response to that, so it might be time figure out a new exercise or diet plan that you truly like better.  Just be sure to stay as positive as you can while focusing on what comes next so you aren’t creating negative energy that follows you you.

6. Focus on past successes. We tend to focus on what’s going wrong, but it’s likely you’ve had many things go smoothly and easily before.  Make a list of what you’ve accomplished in the past, both in the area that’s frustrating you right now and across your whole life.

7. Focus on something else entirely – go volunteer, read a book, watch a movie, go running.  Get out of your own head for a while and your frustration will dissipate. A bonus is that when you relax, sometimes a solution will come that will solve the frustration.

8. Focus on learning something new that can help the situation.  If you’re frustrated because you need a new skill, such as better computer expertise or a different way to exercise that doesn’t hurt your knees, identifying and solving the problem can help.

9. Focus on how you’re growing from the experience. It’s trite, and it’s annoying when you’re in the middle of the frustration, but think back at other times in your life when you were really frustrated. Afterwards, you likely realized you learned a lot from the situation.  If you can figure out what you’re learning while you’re learning it, you will be less frustrated.

10. Focus on what you enjoy in the rest of your life and hunker down and soldier through the frustration and the rough spots. Sometimes, there’s just nothing else that can be done.  Keeping as positive of a mindset as possible, though, will help you get through the situation more quickly and easily. If you find yourself slipping into negative thoughts, retrain your brain by focusing on something positive. It will feel forced at first, but eventually it will become more natural.

What makes you frustrated and what do you do to conquer it?

I have a business that is less than a year old so I foersee this to be a year of great gains and challenges. My business goals are:To steadily build a monthly revenue that can fully support both myself and my partner. To establish our business as the go to for art marketing advice in our local area.To build our seminars and events to the point of being able to support a two-day marketing workshop. To achieve all this we are creating strategies to build our online presence, networking with local art organizations, holding seminars and events to share our knowledge, and generally making ourselves a visible part of the community. We face the challenge of being able to get our brand and message out to enough of our target market, providing the types of services that are most needed and wanted, and growing the business at a pace that we can sustain but also support our goals. All in all I look forward to the challenges and triumphs in the year ahead.
